Paperwork Step by Step

The Legal Bit - Obtaining Your Marriage Licence

A Step-by-Step Guide for a Stress-Free Experience

Getting legally married in Aotearoa starts with securing a marriage licence. For Kiwi couples, this process is surprisingly simple—if you know the steps. Here’s everything you need for a smooth run-up to your wedding day.

Step-by-Step Process

1. Check Your Eligibility
You must be over 16 years old (those aged 16–17 need Family Court consent), not already married or in a civil union, and not closely related. Both same-sex and opposite-sex marriages are legal in NZ.

2. Decide on Your Ceremony and Celebrant
Choose the date, venue, and celebrant for your special day. You’ll need their details when applying for your licence - so confirm availability and book early.

3. Complete the Application
You can apply online at marriages.services.govt.nz or by using the ‘Notice of Intended Marriage’ paper form. Either you or your partner can submit, but you’ll need info for both of you, as well as the celebrant’s details.

4. Sign the Statutory Declaration
The applicant must sign their declaration of intent, confirming the accuracy of information and legality of the marriage.

5. Pay the Fees
A licence costs $150, payable during your application.

6. Wait for Processing
Your licence will be ready at least three working days after submission and remains valid for up to three months. If emailed, forward documents to your celebrant before your wedding.

FAQs

Are witnesses required?
Yes, two witnesses must attend and sign the register.

What if the wedding date changes?
You’ll need to reapply if your new date is outside the three-month licence validity.

Can the licence be sent directly to the celebrant?
Yes, simply tick this option during online application.
